review 1: Who Asked You simply put - is THE writing that we've missed from McMillan. The Butler family became an extension of us, no matter if they were related by blood or not. And Miss BJ was the epitome of a matriarch and more than anything it warmed my soul for her to realize that no matter how much right you instill in your children, some of them just gravitate to the wrong at no fault of their parental upbringing. More than anything, I was happy to find myself smiling after reading the very last word in this book. Welcome Back Ms. McMillan!
review 2: I'm a fan of Ms. McMillan's books, and this one was no exception. I wasn't as emotionally involved as I have been in a few of her previous works (eg. Mama, A Day Late and a Dollar Short, How Stella Got Her Groove Back)... more, but I enjoyed this book all the same. What I admire most about her is the authenticity of her character's voices, and how skillfully she tells a story from their different perspectives. The only criticism I have is that Ms. McMillan gets quite political toward the end of the book, and while I take no issue with her politics and understand the historical and cultural significance of her doing so, it seemed forced and unnecessary to the story as a whole. less
