review 1: A refreshing and inspiring read. I also learned a lot. What I liked most about this memoir is that the author does not see racism as the be-all, end-all to his and every other black person's existence. The Civil Rights battle was fought and won. The message I got from the author is that today's battle is with the individual mind vs. the collective mind. If only all young blacks could grow up in an intact family with a great father like Thomas Chatterton's 'Pappy', the possibilities would be astounding. I applaud Thomas Chatterton Williams for daring to be an individual and a tip of the hat to his exemplary father. Like father, like son, two outstanding men. I strongly recommend this book. .
review 2: I heard about this memoir a long time before I decided to get
... more a copy. Mr Williams and I are about the same age and grew up with the same pressures of our respective cultures. What I loved about this book so much was his honesty and courage to write this book. Courage, not in the sense of confronting hip hop culture, but courage to write openly and honestly about himself. He also writes extensively about his father who was no doubt the biggest force in his life. I highly recommend this book! less
