review 1: For addressing, clarifying, debunking and sourcing so many of the various and numerous 'historic' persona and concepts of Venice, BRAVO! I was thrilled to read all of this and often could recall y times I would come across some of these 'facts' about the autocratic and grabbing Venezia when I was just quite sure this could not be ALL true and wonder how this all came to be. I found the schematic/thematic chapter organization for this book really helpful also - taking so much of what is 'known' or sourced and putting it into a concise summation... I was a bit perplexed w/ the tone of things as we moved into the novocento but..the book was so much more than that, I'm happy to take it for what it does offer.Again, bravo
review 2: Good on the foundation of Venice
... more and its rise and fall as a medieval seafaring, commercial empire. The author emphasizes that Venice's success was the result of its republican, pragmatic, business friendly culture. I would suggest that the reader interested in the subject might read this book in conjunction with Roger Crowley's recent "City of Fortune," reviewed here in March 2012. The author believes that Venice had no significant history after the 17th century, so the last quarter of the book is anecdotal, focusing on the growth of tourism, from the elite to the millions. less

Seems more of a history of TOURISM in Venice than a history of the city per se.
