review 1: This is the first book I have read by Cook and I found it hard to put down, other reviewers have said this book is not as good as previous ones. That says to me that I have more to enjoy as I explore Cook's other works. He writes prose that feels like poetry and in this particular story illustrates how easily and quietly the love in a marriage can change and be lost. And the book has a real ending, and one I like too.
review 2: Was it suicide or murder? In this psychological legal thriller, a seemingly idyllic marriage between two college professors is unraveled in the courtroom. Sam is on trial for murdering his wife; he is easy to dislike. Even though his wife Sandrine dies at the beginning, she is a very big character in this story; she is moody and hard to
... moreread. Did she kill herself to avoid the disease? Did Sam kill her to avoid her debilitating condition? With relentless, yet slow-burning pressure, the truth is played out in the courtroom. Masterful plot with ultimately sympathetic characters. less
