review 1: I really love to read about the history of scientists, but I had never bothered to read a history of Newton. The first 50 pages completely flew by, and the first chapter on Chaloner seemed boring in comparison. Newton had just written about the laws of motion, and Chaloner was going to London to learn how to make nails. However, after Chaloner escapes enriched by his various misdeeds, he becomes a formidable opponent. The history of monetary policy described during this period was also very interesting. Newton had some theories about fractional reserve banking.
review 2: Did you know that Sir Isaac Newton was appointed Master of the Mint and charged with the responsibility of maintaining the purity of English coinage? Did you know that he was extremely aggress
... moreive in carrying out this responsibility? Did you know that one counterfeiter was his most challenging and equally aggressive opponent?Read this interesting history and you'll know all thos things and more. Newton's very strange behavior, his absolute commitment to science, his abrasiveness and general unpleasantness are all laid out in this not great piece of nonfiction. If you have been a fan of Neal Stephenson's The Baroque Trilogy, you will find this an interesting appendix to the third volume "The System of the World." less
