review 1: After 9 chapters of this book , I have given up on it. This story is about Irvin Berlin Pickett, who is a physician in a small community in Wyoming. He is emotionally immature , has no morals, and makes poor choices. He goes from one chosen misfortune to another. Occasionally the author writes a line or two that give pause and says to me...this author can write. But for me, this story needs to be more interesting and better organized. This author introduces too many characters and their story goes no where. To me it seems a rambling mess !
review 2: The vulnerabilities inherent to being human have never been so authentically revealed as in Thomas McGuane's characters. The protagonist, Dr. Berl Pickett, ascends from a flawed childhood toward a somewhat construct
... moreive life but with frequent (and amusing) backslides. Pickett's angst and yearnings drive him but can never be understood by those around him, even those closest to him. Only we, the readers, are privy. The story is a journey to nowhere, as in life, with frequent poignant moments along the way. What more could we ask? less

Given to me by a friend I found it over the edge by way of believeability.

I enjoyed the writer's style, but became bored by the plotline.
