review 1: I have always wondered where underwear comes from. And how exactly is a miniskirt measured? And what defines a 'straight-leg' pant? I think that this book was written just for me. It very quickly and humorously covers the known history of different articles of clothing (sweaters, pants, shirts, gloves, shoes, etc, each have their own chapter). There are some historical references (did you know that Queen Elizabeth I was the Imelda Marcos of gloves?) and there are famous instances of each item in pop culture. I found this book to be a quick read and hugely entertaining, and I learned quite a bit along the way.
review 2: Vaguely interesting, though not as good as his other book I've read, "Gunn's Golden Rules," which was a delight. Difficult to do an overview of
... morethe entire history of fashion in one book, Gunn tries and only partially succeeds. Many terms are undefined - one would probably do better to focus on one particular aspect of fashion with a more narrowly focused book. And it is heavy as hell - thick, glossy pages which are great for photos, but terrible for reading in bed - my sore wrists can attest! less
