review 1: Really fantastic. Edward Curtis was one of the most famous people in Seattle in his day. He was a nationally known photographer who even took a portrait of President Teddy Roosevelt. But, Curtis had a HUGE idea. He wanted to document American Indian tribes before their cultures were completely destroyed. You'll probably recognize some of his photographs, but Curtis was also documenting customs, traditions, and language. He planned to publish twenty volumes over five years, but it ended up taking 30 years and by the end he had been largely forgotten. This book is packed with adventure - an incredible story of one man's passion.
review 2: Don't know where to begin reviewing this book. But, I know it will not suffice to say, Edward Sheriff Curtis was a great photo
... moregrapher and so much more. The history, geography, and pure adventure of Curtis' life makes one pause throughout the book. His tenacity and passion seemed boundless. The information Curtis uncovered about The Battle of Little Bighorn(Custer's Last Stand) was of particular interest having visited the site. Also, a recent trip to UBC's Museum of Anthropology (MOA) gave me an opportunity to see many Indian artifacts. When I return to MOA, it will be with fresh eyes and even more enthusiasm for the assembled historical objects. And last but not least, a trip to New Mexico has been moved up on the travel schedule. The Pueblo Indians (Zuni, Acoma, Taos in particular) were little known to me prior to reading this book. That will be rectified.Savored and Loved this read from start to finish. less
