review 1: I was hoping this book would be released electronically eventually, but I finally got tired of the wait and bought it from Amazon. This book is huge and the text is kind of small. --Now moving on. I really liked this book. It was told from several different viewpoints instead of just from Guntram's diary. After reading the Lion's Den, I was interested in seeing how they would introduce the special character--i don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't read it yet. This one definitely had alot more violence in this book which is expected when a story isn't being told by a naive 19yr old boy. So this story takes off basically from where The Substitute I ended. Guntram is obliviously in love with Konrad and Konrad is still controlling his life. Guntram tries to rebel and ev... moreen rents a place from Goran when Konrad cheats on him again. It was annoying how easy it was for Konrad to shed a few tears and then Guntram forgives him. Guntram does go against Konrad's wishes and attends a friend's wedding in Argentina along with bodyguards and afterwards the real drama starts. Guntram gets kidnapped...again, but this time he is missing for 3 years! During this time period Konrad and Goran are desperately looking for Guntram, while hoping against hope that he is actually still alive. I love the interaction with his children. They were getting on Konrad's case for not finding Guntram and demanding that Konrad bring him home. They were some of the most heart breaking conversations. Konrad let his people off their leash and things got bloody real fast. We get an up close look at Goran's methods of persuasion. They not only tortured people, but displayed their corpses in public places as a warning. We get to see Fefo again and he admits he was in love with Guntram. It was hinted at in the first book, but in this one he admits he was in love with him. (Like just about every guy that meets Guntram). Fefo is now some sort of intelligence agent and also gets involved with finding Guntram. He is pretty bad ass now that he has matured.Throughout this forced separation we really get to see the real Konrad and you get a better understanding of how much Guntram means to him and how much he's brought to his life. I was really glad he stayed true to him. Konrad essentially falls apart without him and its' interesting to see how he copes without him. One of the only good things to come out of all this is Guntram finally has heart surgery and restored to better health. The book does end on a high note so, after slogging through all the not so happy parts, there is payoff at the end.
review 2: It is hard to review this book without spoiling it. Another fantastic read by Tionne Rogers. I can tell that there must be at least one more book in the series based on the couple of lose ends and how open the end was. Both Konrad and Guntram mature immensely in this book. The pair that starts at the beginning of the book is so different of how they were at the end. This book is way darker than the first. It punches you in the gut, kicks you to the grown, bites you and spits you out and just when you think you can't take it anymore you discover that there is still more to go on before you see the light at the end of the tunnel. While the first one was a rollercoaster of ups and downs, this one felt like a giant downhill ride. At one point I started skimming just to see if it was ever going to get better. Goran and Federico were fantastic. My only minus was that I wish it had more Konrad and Guntram moments. It would have made the story a total 12 out of 5. As it stands, it is still a solid five. less
