review 1: I loved Issy and watching her story unfold as she fought to find a life that was free of emotion. The story begins where Shattered Rose left off, with Issy in the hospital, recovering from alcohol poisoning that almost killed her. Her parents are divorced and her mother is emotionally unstable as a result of the divorce. She even tried to kill herself and would have succeeded had Issy not found her in a pool of blood. Issy's father brings her home from the hospital with him when she's recovered from the alcohol poisoning, determined to keep her under tabs for the next semester of college. Also at her father's house is his assistant, Grant, whom Issy has been head over heels for since she was 13. Seeing him and the emotions it stirs in her scares her, so she escapes through... more her drinking and her partying. The struggles that ensue force her to make a decision that will change her life for the better, or completely destroy her.I really enjoyed this book. Like Shattered Rose, there were still some editing issues, though not quite as many. I do think the author uses the character's names too often, making the flow of the text seem more elementary at times. When there are only two people in a scene, it's not necessary to use Grant touched my back, Grant looked at me, Grant pulled me close. We know it's Grant, it would be better to replace the name in many instances with "he." Also, I think T.L. Gray has an amazing grasp on dialogue, the tone, the beats, etc. The only thing I would suggest is that she read some of it aloud to make sure it sounds as if someone is speaking. Can't instead of cannot, don't instead of do not, that type of thing. Most people don't say, "I will not go with you," that sounds too formal, and Issy is definitely not formal. Most people say, "I won't go," or "I won't go with you."Overall I think this was a great continuation of the Winsor Series. I just purchased Jakes story and have been fighting the urge to read it all morning because I know once I start I won't be able to stop.
review 2: I have to say I stayed up until 2am just to finish this book. I read the first couple of chapters and then set the book down for a couple of days because life gets busy. I picked it up again and couldn't put it down. Issy is a hard-edged girl. She saw her mother get burned by love when her father walked out. She thinks it's a family curse and therefore refuses to open herself to the chance of anything more than a quick fling. Grant is her father's assistant and he has fallen for her in so many ways, even though she treats him horribly. He knows she is just hurting and waits for her. There are daddy issues and mommy issues all over the place. Definitely realistic. Issy has to find out how to love without fear. That is where the book has some not so subtle Christian undertones. Christ was all about love and forgiveness. And that is what Issy needs to learn. less
