review 1: This book was okay. It had a lot of information but some of the chapters were missing main events that had happened over the course of the killer's killing sprees. Also, a lot of the chapter's timelines were too back and forth and sometimes just didn't make any sense. It was kind of like a poorly written Quentin Tarantino film. I did like that this book had random quotes, facts, interviews, and trivia in the back though. It added a "fun" element to it. I would not recommend this as a first book to anyone who has not read anything about serial killers before.
review 2: 2 1/2 stars. Great title, poor writing. There are almost as many grammatical mistakes and missing periods in this book as there are in Fab Four FAQ (though that book is much more forgivable). Ther
... moree are egregious factual errors in this book. I am not an expert on all serial killers, but Ted Bundy, in particular, is one I have read every book on that I can. In this book, the Philbin brothers claim that Bundy was caught by the police after the Chi Omega murders at the sorority house in Florida. In fact, he was caught after he murdered twelve-year-old Kimberly Diane Leach. Her name in this book? Kimberley Martin. I mean, Ann Rule wrote a super-famous book on Bundy. He is probably one of the top five most well-known serial killers in America. By proxy, so have the names of his victims become really well-known. Everyone knows her name was Kimberly Leach, because she did not fit the MO of the other victims. She wasn't a college student with her brown hair parted down the middle. She was a middle-schooler on her way to get her purse when she vanished forever. This was the last straw, and events culminated that led to Bundy's arrest. People wanted his blood for her murder, in particular. Also, the book notes Bundy's speaking on how easy it is to kill prostitutes because they are hardly ever missed. I wasn't aware that Bundy ever killed prostitutes. He killed respectable women in their early to mid-twenties who still had a lot to live for. So what the hell are the Philbin brothers talking about?I am interested in serial killers, but I don't feel entirely okay having read this book. I feel that, more than anything, it talked ad nauseam about the ways in which all the victims of all the serial killers perished. Since it didn't get the names of Bundy's victims entirely correct, I don't really trust what they wrote about the other serial killers' victims either. And that's the point here: we have a whole book all about the lives of these serial killers... for what purpose? What of the victims? Nobody (apart from Ann Rule) seems to spend too much time in contemplation of what type of loss it meant for all these families who lost all these children, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, grandfathers, mothers, fathers, etc. I want to be clear that I read these books because I am interested in the psychology of why these people do what they do. Usually I hope for some sort of insight into what could have triggered a murderous rampage or other such behavior. I am not looking to read an account that details how the murderer strangled his victims without even giving me a little background information on the victims and acknowledging that their lives were in no way worth ending.I can't, in good conscience, recommend this book. I think books that inform you of the serial killer's life but also let other women, men, etc. know how to avoid the same fate are a good thing. This book, above all else, seemed to almost glorify the existence of serial killers both in America and abroad. I am not okay with that, and no one else should be either. less
