review 1: I'm not a big YA reader but this book was recommended by my librarian since I had just returned from the Asheville area. The author does a great job with setting. One of the big appeals of this book for me is the great character development. The story tugged at my heart at times but wasn't overly sad. The resolution of Grover's dilemmas weren't entirely believable but it was hopeful and nicely resolved. Some of the themes are heavy but the author dealt with them in a very authentic way which I liked. When my daughter can read this book I will recommend it to her for sure!
review 2: I enjoyed the setting of Ashville, North Carolina and the rich characters Hays has developed. As I learned about Grover creating tapestries out of natural materials in the bamboo fo
... morerest I had to research about bamboo growing in NC. Indeed it can be grown there! I thought the whole idea of a boy creating the artistic tapestries was so unique and if reading the book with children I would want to show them what tapestries looked like (perhaps those done by the mountain people as that was also in the story) to help give them the visual of tapestries. While there is sadness in the story I enjoyed the way the children lifted each other up. The only part I did not think fit well was the "bedroom" incident with Grover's father. It seemed out of place for the grade level I would think would read this book and certainly takes it out of elementary schools. less

I hope to finish this book at some point. It's quiet, but interesting.
