review 1: "One Last Strike" was one of the all time greatest baseball/ St. Louis Cardinals books ever written. Tony LaRussa was and will always be my favorite manager of the Cardinals. Tony's purpose of writing this book was to show that even after coming back after a terrible season and starting out bad too doesn't mean to give up, it means to push all the way through and see what happens in the end. He wanted to show us just how he was able to motivate the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2011 season and to win the 2011 World Series. The theme of this book is most definitely sports. This book is nothing but baseball, so if baseball isn't for you then neither is this book. I think that Tony knew just what to put in this book to keep up entertained all the way through this book. The writer... more wanted you to see the hardships he had to endure through the season. He wanted to show how the team didn't always get along. He wanted you to see just how much trouble the entire team went through just to win the 2011 World Series. In the novel LaRussa writes about how after a game in Detroit, Tony locked the door to the food and made the players have to go out if they wanted to eat because they had played so poorly that he wasn't going to make it easy and he was going to make them try. Tony LaRussa made me want to keep reading. This book was absolutely one the the greatest books I've ever read. I think that ever baseball loving person should read this book. It's packed full of adventure, and thrill and memories of the 2011 season. I would rate this book a 10 out of 10 and wouldn't change a thing in this book.
review 2: I remember when watching Game 6 of the 2011 World Series and all the drama behind it I said to myself, "This is going to be a great book. Nobody will believe all this actually happened in one game."Two years later, I've read the book by the former Cardinals manager, Tony La Russa. And yes, I still don't believe it happened. This book not only talks about the epic Game 6, which I believe is probably the greatest game I've ever seen (although 1988's Game 1, 1991's Game 7 and the Dodgers back-to-back-to-back-to-back home run game in 2006 are close). This book takes the reader through the entire 2011 season and how the Cardinals got there. Extremily detailed but not overboard like another La Russa themed-book, "Men at Work" by George Will or "Three Nights In August" by Buzz Bissinger does. The book also goes back throughout La Russa's career and talks about his White Sox days, McGwire and steroids (although I believe he doesn't go into that part quite enough because well, probably just doesn't want to), the 89 earthquake, Darryl Kile and the 2006 World Series team. And of course the 1988 Gibson home run.La Russa seemed like a very smart manager that knew what he was doing along with his right-hand man Dave Duncan, the pitching coach. I really like La Russa's take on interviews and as a journalist, it's refreshing to hear. If you're a Cardinal fan, this is a must-read. Any baseball fan will really like it too. less
