review 1: The main character in the story is Zulaikha.fact related to this book.Yusuf and Zulaikha is the Quranic verse of Yusuf (Joseph) and Zulaikha (the person known in the Bible as Potiphar's wife and whose name is not given there). It has been told and retold countless times in many languages spoken by Muslims, especially Persian. Its most famous version was written in Persian by Jami (1414-1492), in his Haft Awrang ("Seven Thrones"). The story has by then many elaborations, and is capable of a Sufi interpretation, where Zulaikha's lust for Yusuf represents the soul's longing for God.

... moreately ask, what is the point of life? What is the point of civilization and community? The story feels real and natural, as do the characters, important since we have few (none?) stories by Afghani girls themselves, so this will have to do. Reedy leaves the big questions open for the reader to decide, which I appreciate. A beautiful rendering of a culture very different in many ways from my own, and yet similar in others. Worth a read. less
