review 1: This is another classic literature story turned into YA; however, this time it's based on real people: John Keats, Byron and Shelley. It makes for an interesting premise, but in the end the book fell short for me. I just could not accept that any of these characters were real. It just seemed forced to me and I was disappointed overall. I would have rather read about them in their time, not ours - I think teens would have connected better to that than this forced attempt.
review 2: After spending a ridiculously long time on this book, I still found myself disappointed by the end of the story. Told through the perspective of John, one of Shelly's good friends, the reader is able to see character development through multiple flashbacks of the three main characters
... more, Shelly, John, and Gordon. I loved Shelly's character with her determined, bizarre personality. However, the writing style of Roth bored me to tears. I reread numerous paragraphs to obtain important information because I would skim information rather than read it. I found difficult to "get into" the book. So although the premise of the story is great, the writing lacked the capability to draw me further into the story. less
