review 1: not at all what i was expecting to find in this ever so popular book. it was a joy to read the beginnings, playful and nostalgic. The author to me has successfully captured a childs mind and words in narration and dialogues. the regional language has also been used in a way not difficult for the reader to understand. the later half of the story; is more monotone in emotions; sparked only by Majeed's mind flashing back. the essense of hope in the protagonist's mind transfers to the readers, anf kept me reading onky like majeed; suddenly come to a halt. such a light read, makes it more enjoyable and easy to recall. theres a lot of unfulfilled emotions; the true pure love between majeed and suhra.. majeeds success.. etc. an essense of humour is always felt even at the darke... morest hours through out the novel. loved it..!
review 2: This is the first book written in my mother tongue that I have ever completed. It is a book for sentimental Malayalis like me - the sort of person who would cry when he watches MOONAM PAKKAM or THOOVANA THUMBIKAL. I thought it was an extremely flawed book. For example, Bashir explains the whole of Majid's journey across India in a single paragraph. And Majid's world view after his journey is quite banal. Bashir strikes me as the sort of person whom Naipaul described as being extremely anxious about his own conduct and in the process failed to study the society around him. The whole novel takes place in a sort of vacuum where the external influences are not really explained. It is almost as if Bashir was in a hurry to write this novel and he wasnt really bothered about what was going on in the society around him. The main characters are victims of this society, but what exactly is going on in this society - this is not explained. Majid and Suharra could be characters in Enid Blyton's fantasy novel, THE FARAWAY TREE. There is almost nothing in this book about the sort of society they live in or how the main characters are influenced by it. Except for vague references to how Muslims do not help each other. If I was not a Malayali, I would not have bought this sentimental crap. But I am a nostalgic Malayali and I did enjoy parts of this novel - especially the scenes from Majid and Suharra's childhood. If you are a fan of tragic and sentimental Malayalam films of the 80s like I am, you might enjoy this novel. less

Best book of my life. Mammootty has done an huge sin by making a movie and acting as majeed. Best part of the book is when majeed is leaving home for the last time and Suhra waving good bye. She had to say something, but since the bus came, she couldnt. What was that she wanted to say ? no other love story has affected me like this. It was a massive small huge story.Like Erich Segals Love Story.
