review 1: This is a biographical novel about Louis Michaux....and it is informative and amazing....in fact, my only problem with it, is that it is a biographical novel...which means MOST of it is factual, with a few liberties taken to add conversations they know about but don't have copies of, things like that....but what it means in reality (and in a library) is that it's a hard sell.....it's not just facts, it's not just fiction but a mix....my hope is to get people to read it, and then encourage them to research and find out which is which.....I had no idea who Louis Michaux was, and now that I've read of his fight to improve literacy in Harlem, to improve the lives of African Americans in the 60s and his passion for his books, I need to find out more. Everyone needs to read th... moreis book, it's important not to forget individuals who influenced a generation, including Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. ....and countless others who aren't famous but had their lives vastly improved by one man who insisted that they learn their history and read more books.
review 2: As a librarian, book lover and cheerleader for thinking and knowing history, I ate this book up. The author's choice of subjects, a Harlem bookseller, is quirky but wonderful. In one illustrated "fiction documentary" Vaunda Nelson ties together so many facets of Lewis Michaux's time: Black Pride, poetry, African-American history, and Civil Rights. As a school librarian, I worry about the readers out there. Will No Crystal Stair appeal to the average Joe? Perhaps I should take inspiration from Lewis Michaux himself-- "Knowledge is power." less

An important novel, an interesting novel, but one I wish was a non-fiction biography instead.
