review 1: I'm not exactly a fan of the bonkbuster, in fact I don't think I've read one since we passed copies of Jilly Cooper & Jackie Collins along the back row of boring maths classes when I was 14 {you'll be unsurprised to know I was terrible maths}.Last year I met Victoria Fox on a writing retreat & she was so lovely I had to read one of her books {& believe me when I say if you met her you wouldn't think she was the New Jackie Collins!}This is a fabulous read, of glamour & sex & suspicions & vengeance with an underlying theme that will be familiar to anyone whose seen the play An Inspector Calls. Basically be careful how you treat people....Anyway this fabulous page turner has made me want to revisit Jackie & Jilly etc! Give it a go, even if you don't think the bonkbuster is f... moreor you!
review 2: Power Games, Victoria Fox. Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews. I was looking forwards to this as I'd loved Victoria’s Glittering Fortunes, but sadly this book didn't cut it for me....I think that although the premise interested me, there were just too many characters involved. By the time I'd got to understand one it was time to meet the next one, and I just didn't feel I knew any of them well enough to like them or care about what happened to them. Some were shallow, some greedy, some simply in professions that make their jobs from digging dirt. The man behind it all – I wanted to sympathise with him but just couldn't...Once they were on the island it reminded me too much of that school staple Lord of the Flies in how they changed character, and divided into groups and argued. I think that my main problem was not knowing the characters well enough to worry about them. I have to feel people are real and here we've the seven Celebrities, their families and friends, their publicity staff and managers, the man behind everything, the people around him...it was just too many without one or two focus characters, and the emotion got spread too thinly for me. Plus of course their faults – even though some redeemed towards the end – were such that I just didn't like them :( Some you win, some you don't and I'm just glad this wasn't my first Victoria Fox book as I'd never have read the great fun read Glittering Fortunes..Stars: Two – sorry, just didn’t work for me. Started off promisingly and then seemed to lose it's way a bit. Not my favourite Victoria Fox book
