review 1: So in the end I liked this book fine. But I didn't love it. And I definitely don't get the rave reviews it got. Like many historical novels, it reads a little slow. Which normally is fine for me, but I found myself having trouble paying attention or caring much about Giulia's plight. It may just be that I didn't read this book at the right time, or it may just be that I was never that fascinated by this period in history, the Italian Renaissance. So, this might have to go in the "it's not you, it's me" category.
review 2: I don't typically read in this genre but had an unexpected opportunity to pick up this book. Although I prefer faster pacing, I was delighted by the history and technical descriptions, and I found the writing to be very good. Although I was fr... moreustrated with Giulia's insistence on getting married (to the point of eye-rolling sometimes), I found the writing and scenes to be lovely enough to push this from a high three to a four star rating for me. less
