review 1: Hinori's a genderless warrior of the Naha'i's tribe who, while's away from home on a journey of self-discovery and growth that is a rite of passage for his people, meets by chance Mateo.Mateo is a youth of the Nemway village, whose inhabitants are divided into strictly separated gender roles: the females are the nurturers, the males are the fighters and providers.Opposites attracts; but while they're falling in love with each other, they have to fight the prejudice from both parties involved in order to be together. The major problem I had with this short story was that it felt too much like a recollection of facts and much less like a narration. Was it informative? Yes. Now I'm aware of all there's to know about the Nemway and the Naha'i. Was it entertaining? Meh. Also, da... moret ending! I never understood nor particularly liked deus ex machina finales. But mad props to the originality of the concept. Never read something quite like this.
review 2: This is based on a futuristic society. There are two different groups of human beings. One, that is does break down gender into two roles: female and male, then one that is broken up into gender roles. Naha’i are the natives, who are gender-based. They 'males' have the ability to carry children. Only a few have the ability to bare children. The other group, Nemway, are gender based and their technology is superior. Hinori is on their 'journey', which is something they all do at a certain age. During his journey, spying on the Nemway, he meets one of their 'males', Mateo. Mateo is someone who doesn't want to fit into a 'role' just because they deemed him a 'male'. Together they continue on their journey that leads to a world changing event. This was a very well rounded story. less
