review 1: While his anecdotes were very intriguing, I think I was expecting at least a more engaging or novel-esque narrative... And, perhaps even more unrealistically, more philosophical/theological insight into the heart of African spirituality. Very interesting, though, and not a bad book to pick up if you're interested in the topic. Some good snapshots of popular belief, especially his encounters with people who live at the intersections of indigenous beliefs and customs, Islam, and Christianity.
review 2: Naipaul is the kind of writer who makes one want to be the traveler without a camera and sneakers. This book is about his recent travels in Africa. Witchcraft exists alongside "mainstream" religions as a strong influence on African lives. Violence and retribution
... moreare part of the practice of witchcraft. Is it any wonder, the author seems to ask us, that much of the modern politics in Africa is steeped in such violence? less
