review 1: This was more like a 2.5. The parts that were good were spell-binding. Reed's description of the Soviet submarines during the Cuban Missile Crisis was shocking. We're all lucky to be alive. All his other descriptions of US and Soviet actions were rivetting reading. His descriptions of the technologies developed to identify and track subs resulted in my skipping pages at times. If you like sub movies, reading about the Cold War or remember all or parts of the Cold War, you'll want to read this.
review 2: Interesting sea stories mixed with contrived dialogue. It felt like the author read other books about cold war submarine events then wrote historical fiction when describing events that took place between individuals. He was a submariner himself for a while b
... moreut his personal stories were not that eventful. The writing is a bit too dramatic and pretentious for my tastes. Some things the author clearly did not know what he was talking about. I listened to the audio version and the narrator did not know how to pronounce common words which annoyed me. Most troubling of all was that the author justifies, at the beginning of the book, his disclosure of classified information for the sake of history. That is not OK; if anything he wrote was actually true rather than created in his own mind, then he should be in jail. less
