review 1: I really thought I would like this book. But then I didn't. It wasn't bad or anything but I didn't exactly enjoy reading it much. It just seemed to be unnecessarily long in relation to the small amount of information we actually learn from the book. I found myself a little board during multiple chapters as I kept reading in the hope that I would get to an exciting part. There were some pretty exciting parts and some very good chapters but they were surrounded by unnecessary bits that I found completely uninteresting.Overall I just don't feel like the author gave us a lot of important information. Most of the book was just Ari having conversations that could have been skipped or her tedious inner-monologuing. This wouldn't be so bad if all of that dribble held any informati... moreon at all. This is partially shown by how confused I was at the end of the book. After all of that nothing-with-a-few-action-scenes I'm still not entirely sure why they were fighting in the first place. The author didn't explain anything about the mysterious magic, the cause of the war, or exactly who the leaders of both sides were and why they were fighting, and if she did it was very badly done. Furthermore, I also took very little about the characters away from the book. None of them seemed very life like. We know a bit about Ari but very little about why she really does half the things she does or how she got into the situation she is in. The only things I gathered about Shane is that he was handsome, a bit of a player, and deeply in love with Ari (for some reason). You'd think in all of that book there would be more Ari/Shane moments but, apart from a few at the start, we don't see them interact with each other a lot. Hunter just seems like some tough, overly cautious dude who always seems to switch his views on everything. It's as if the author couldn't quite decide how she wanted him to act. At the start you seem to get an idea of what he's like but then there are these things he does that don't make a lot of sense and he becomes woefully out of character towards the end without a clear explanation. The only real thing I learned about Charity was that she's a seer.It felt like I was reading this book for a century and yet everything still seems to be extremely under explained.Perhaps I am being unobservant or more will be explained in the next book(s), but that's just my opinion.
review 2: This book gave me goosebumps in the final battle scene. Absolutely recommend. Brilliant writing by Ms. Knight, although the common mistake where "you're" is used in place of "your" sort of bugged me beyond end!!!I adored all the characters in this book. Ari who was a social outcast (to her choosing) was in no way annoyingly whiney as I find a lot of heroines to be lately. All her actions were completely understandable and her innocence and loyalty to her people is great.Shane made me smile a lot and that't always nic3. I find in a lot of YA books the "hero" is the sorta bad guy type with the social awkwardness that the heroine posseses so having him be the most popilar and goodlooking guy in the school was a nice change for me.Charity I felt like I just wanted to hug her in all of her scenes. There's no way to avoid the fact that this silver eyed girl has had some serious psychological abuse.Hunter is undoubtedly the most realistic character in this story (take away the magic blue flames) he's a big brawny guy that is fiercy loyal to his bestfriend as well as very protective of his loved ones. Will and Hunter kind of have parallels here and it makes sense given they're both Guards. He's practically Arianna's father really.Nevaeh (....I had a hard time trying to pronounce her name... like seriously what is it? "Nehv-iah"/"Neev-ahya") anyway, Nev and Livi struck me as really cool girls and showed genuine warmth and concern for Ari whenever it called for it. I hoped we'd get more of them though.Brittany/Brittney (I forget) I enjoyed her scenes with Ari, she was just a harmless, obnoxious teenage girl and I liked that about her.The Family and The Council both got on my nerves, like what the actual *bleep*. They represented power hungry politicians to me, using kids as pawns in a war.Vivian's death made me tear up honestly. She died for her son and her daughter watched. Richard scared her so muxh that I dont really think we got a sweet moment of mommy-kids this entire book. With that said, if Richard doesn't die in the next book I will be furious. less
