review 1: When i found this on Goodreads (I genuinely thank this website very much for the source of all my favorite books) i had two thoughts:1) I MUST get this book nowand2) I can totally relate to this girl.Because for me, the recipe for a great middle grade realistic fiction book is a relatable character. And after the first page, I was hooked.Being Asian-American myself, I found so many similarities between Lucy and me as a child. I didn't like all the Indonesian dishes i encountered. My parents encouraged me through math and science, while I preferred english. When everyone wants Siomay, i want pizza, and after reading this book, i finally understood that is was okay to think like that. I know what it's like to feel as if the whole world has turned against you, and Wendy Wan-L... moreong Shang captures this emotion perfectly.face it, this character is as real and totally believable as you can get.But what really made this book one of my FAVORITE MIDDLE GRADE BOOKS EVER was the connection between Yi Po and Lucy. When i was young, my grandmother would visit us in the U.S. from time-to-time and every moment Yi Po and Lucy had together i had experienced with my nenek. Every time Yi Po folded Lucy clothes, i thought of my grandmother. Every time she cooked things for her, I remembered my nenek and how she connected with my friends like Yi Po did with Lucy's and just every little thing i read about reminded me of her and how much i love spending time for her. I appreciated my grandma more.Lucy's triumph, Talent, Yi Po, dumplings - everything fit perfectly.
review 2: The Great Wall Of Lucy Wu by Wendy Wan-Long ShangThis book is appropriate for a 3rd grade classroom to read for fun. In here you learn Chinese and the brief history about the discrimination Chinese people faced such as war and famine. All this ties into the life of an 11 year old who learns to appreciate who she is and who she has in her life. The story revolves amongst Lucy Wu a fifth grader going into sixth grade pretty soon. Her plans for the future is to become a basketball player and open a design store called, “At the Buzzer,” right along with her best friend Madison. Lucy is a proud Chinese-American and stands firm on her beliefs on living an Americanized life. Her siblings on the other hand don’t agree with her. Lucy’s older sister is named Regina and her brother is named Kenny; Lucy is thrilled at the idea that her sister will be moving out to college leaving her the room they shared all to herself. Lucy’s’ dreams are quickly shattered once she discovers that her grandmother’s sister, Yi Po, would be staying in her soon to be bedroom. Lucy comes up with an idea she builds “The Great Wall” to keep them separated in her bedroom. Throughout the time Yi Po stays at their house Lucy blames all her misfortunes on her. Yi Po’s stay helps us relieve heartwarming and tragic incidents that lead her to the separation of her family. Lucy is then faced with another serious setback after knowing that she would have to attend Saturday school to learn Chinese thanks to Talent. To make matters worse her school is having a basketball tournament against the sixth graders and their faculty. Sloane another six grader makes her life miserable and makes sure Lucy doesn’t become the head captain of the team. However, Madison gives Lucy motivating words, which push her to try even harder. In all of this mess Lucy is able to connect with Yi Po and finds the support she’s been looking for all this time. At the end Lucy acknowledges that this indeed was one of her best years of her life. less
