review 1: I am the world's biggest HST fan, so I'm glad this exists. It's always good to have an excuse to run through this story again. But there's nothing compelling in this graphic novel. It's an EXTREMELY Cliff Note version of Thompson's biography, and even strangely disordered at that. The illustrations and the text are both lackluster and uninteresting. But it takes about an hour to read, so what the hell...
review 2: 3.5 starsA very quick summation of the myriad lives that Hunter S. Thompson lived. There is a good introduction to the graphic biography by one of HST's former editors that attempts to provide the much-needed separation between the writer HST and the character HST. ... moreue. The introduction and the graphic panels and story that follow do a pretty good job presenting a broad-stroke narrative to his wild life. It doesn't fixate very long on any particular times in his life, which works for the most part, but I did feel the end was hastily put together. I think around 25 more pages in the 90s-till-2005 areas could have made for a better bio, but I am pretty biased as one of my best friends interned for him during those years since her dad was a good friend of HST in Woody Creek, CO. It ended up being better than I imagined it would have been, but I still prefer reading his writing over reading the expansive biographical material surrounding his life. less
