review 1: For Francophiles, anyone who has ever studied French, and all those who enjoyed David Sedaris' essays on the French language, this is a delightful read. Alexander's struggle to learn a language he adores is charming and should be encouraging to readers of any age who have faced a similar battle. His unwavering affection for French language and culture, in spite of his travails, made me miss French. I think I'll be picking up some of my Asterix volumes again - it was such a joy to revisit the language through Alexander's eyes, and it made me grateful for the study abroad experience I had at a relatively young age that got me to a solid familiarity with French so I don't have to start back at square one even after years of not using it. If you've ever needed some inspiration... more/prodding to finally get around to learning that second language, this book is just the thing.
review 2: This book is very charming and sometimes funny, but overall, quite useless. I'm not saying this in a mean way, but I really did not understand the purpose of this book. Mr. Alexander wanted to learn French, he did, that's about it. Although I did find some passages and anecdotes interesting, as a whole, I did not get anything from this memoir. I unfortunately can't recommend it, since it is not a memorable read at all. less
