review 1: I received this book (along with a baguette pan) as a Mother's Day gift from my daughter.A life long bread baker myself, I could appreciate the effort put into the author's quest. As I joined Mr. Alexander in his year long commitment in creating the perfect loaf of bread, I not only laughed at the humor of some of his experiences, but actually learned some things about yeast and the way bread reacts to different circumstances. Though the author's purpose in traveling was to be a culinary journey, I believe it surprised him (as it did me) that it became something of a spiritual journey as well. Great book!
review 2: I would never have thought I would like a book about bread making so much. His obsession with making the perfect loaf was thoroughly enjoyable
... moreand relatable. The author's humor also reminds me a little of Dave Barry. I can't wait to read the 64 dollar tomato. And there are tidbits of information in this book that have transformed me - like hearing the marketing of razor blades. I am now enlightened where before I have been confused by my purchases. less
