review 1: I appreciated what everyone appreciated about this book: the intricate braiding of lives, the exquisite detail, the paradoxical simplicity of the complex telling. My problem with the book was the terrible inequality between Florian Kilderry, the man, and Ellie Dillahan, the woman. Loved her, HATED him, wasteful, useless, unformed embryo of a man. And she was so lovely, so competent and generous and good. He was not the one who broke all the hearts of the heartbroken people he left behind, but he did leave them behind. Not fair!
review 2: If you need a break from murder mysteries and spy thrillers, this is the book for you. It is a leisurely but perceptive stroll through an Irish village in summer. The characters are well developed, the scenery and backgroun
... mored described in detail. The plot is interesting, though a few strands are not clearly resolved in terms of outcome. All in all, the slow pace, the lack of explosive drama and the writing style, as well as an interesting cast of characters, make it a well worthwhile book for the reader in search of a refreshing read. less

Beautiful prose. Writing very descriptive. But lacked a real bite of story and just went no where.

An understated tragedy with a story that's well-told, if not entirely new. Lovely writing.
