review 1: This book, like this series so far, is an easy, fun, and unfortunately all-too-quick read. An overall rather enjoyable experience, the world building and character development in this novel is a little slow at first, especially the world building aspect. The next two books really pick up the pace on fleshing that out, so it seems to be more of a symptom of its first novel status. However, the main character is well-fleshed-out. Looking over her shoulder made for an enjoyable narrative, from the perspective of an interesting, relatable individual.While the story pacing in the beginning is also a little slow, it begins to pick up alongside the development of the protagonist's relationships. It seems that this is what this series is really centered around- the relationships a... morend character development happening all around the protagonist. And in my opinion, as impressively as the characters are written in this series, that's a good thing. I would highly suggest is that if, by the end of the book, you like it at all, give the next book or two in the series a read as well. I did, and definitely did not regret it.
review 2: I have to say that this book seems to be a compilation of a series or two, I kept thinking, I have read this and I didn't really like it THEN either, but the author name wouldn't match in my head, then I remembered an author, and another and...possibly even three series of books. Kind of a cheese and egg scramble,with green peppers it's all stuck together here. But the taste buds recognize the flavors. less
