review 1: This is a painful book to read. The pain of those who suffered the war and genocide when the former Yugoslavia disintegrated is evident even years after the conflict ceased. The book provides many accounts of families seeking their loved ones - a search for bones in forests, mountains, caves and mass graves. The intensity, the fear, the trauma, the heartbreak are all palpable, and in this way the author helps us see just how hideous the war across this land was. I was also strongly affected by this book as I visited Bosnia & Herzegovina in 2006 - where I also experienced the ongoing rawness of the conflict expressed in this book. I could envisage the incredible Dr. Ewa Klonowski who spent years excavating and lovingly reconnecting bones with their surviving loved ones ... morebecause I've met these incredible people. It is an obsession really - the desire, no need, to help people find closure, bury their precious sons, daughters, fathers and husbands and then continue to do so until every last bone is found, accounted for, put to rest. The author does a superb job painting the reality of this process. The pictures she paints brought me back to the heart wrenching moment of seeing a tiny, blue jacket from a mass grave, to the anguish and pain in the voices of the women rape survivors and to the absolutely obsessed man in Sarajevo who lived on nicotine and caffeine because he still felt in siege mode. This is a real book that genuinely and honestly provides an account of those living post-conflict. If you are interested in human rights, war impacts or the war in Bosnia, this is a powerful read. But, be prepared for a harrowing journey. One cannot help but be moved.
review 2: The more I read about the Bosnian conflict the more I need to know. We can continue to say how are or were these things possible to happen in modern world or we can try to recover. I think it's extremely vital for all young people to know in detail about this conflict. So that we can be aware of what we are capable of at the hands of propaganda and warfare as well as politics and nationalism. We, the people, must know. less

Small book but big impact. The book really puts a face to Bosnia after the war in the 1990s.
