review 1: to me it seems that any attempt to describe this book would narrow it down to few words which would not do justice to what herrndorf created. i have started reading the blog, which the book is based on, like three years ago, anti-chronologically, always starting with the latest entry until the point i found myself re-reading certain pieces he shared before. herrndorf started the blog after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, without knowing how much time he would have left ..i found myself reading his blog as i was looking for comfort. i guess because i was helpless in supporting someone going through a very similar struggle. i wanted to learn that being faced with death not only bears quarrels but also moments of enthusiasm and appreciation of the little time any human ... morehas. as the blog became something like a faithful companion which touched me time after time, there was no question as to read the book and his story once again - in the "correct" order.in fact, herrndorn allows his readers to participate in all the ups and downs he faced. it reads like a diary and it sometimes seems as though he forgot that he shared these thoughts with a random public (yet, there were moments when he was very aware of the many people who followed his posts, e.g. when he "kindly" asked people to refrain from contacting him). i admire his honest exposure of hope, self-irony (when he shares anecdotes as to what the tumor in his brain did to his perception and doing), his eye for the small things in life, cynism, fear and calculated optimism. any page is more than worth reading. herrndorf is, per se, a fantastic writer. with this very personal last piece, which he worked on casually while actually writing two other "real" novels, he set a memorial. one of the best and intense books i read in my whole life.
