review 1: If you like your horror raw and juicy and yet darkly poetic, then you absolutely must read this no-holds-barred gore-fest from extreme author Wrath James White. The depravity contained within the fluid-splattered pages of "Succulent Prey" will put the jaws of even the most hardened splatterpunk fan on the floor. Cannibalism, torture, rape, sodomy...yeah, this one ain't fit for those for those with weak stomachs. Heck, it may not even be fit for those with cast-iron stomachs! You will probably want to scurry off to church after finishing this novel in the hopes of washing its stain off your soul.Mr. White must have photos of the head honchos at Leisure Books engaging in vile acts with various farm animals that he used as blackmail material, because there is no other explana... moretion as to why a mainstream horror imprint agreed to publish such a nasty piece of literature. But thank God they did, because it has given extreme horror fans a new classic that ranks right up there with Jack Ketchum and Skipp & Specter and somehow manages to outgross them all. It's graphic, it's gory, it's disturbing in so many cringe-worthy ways...and for those who enjoy such edgy, grisly horror fiction, it's an absolute must-read, even if afterwards you find yourself curled up the corner weeping for your mommy.
review 2: I'm a fan of Wrath James White, but even he might have gone too far with this one. I can definitively say that this is the most graphic horror novel I've ever read - more so than even Jack Ketchum's Off Season or White's collaboration with Edward Lee on The Teratologist. However, with the characters in this story being so unlikable, I didn't find this nearly as effective as those other books. White's writing is strong and he always gives the reader a good portion of philosophical theories to think about from many different viewpoints, and Succulent Prey is no exception. I think this would have worked better as a novella, because I think the story somewhat overstayed its welcome. It's a fascinating, but fairly simple concept that didn't need 300+ pages to tell it. While most of the characters were consistent, I found a few decisions they made seem to be forced and out of character. More atmosphere would have been nice to improve on the story's terribly creepy premise. Also, the pace was awkward at times; some scenes felt rushed while others dragged on a bit too long. However, the incredibly graphic descriptions that occur in almost every chapter should have you ripping through this book very quickly. There are images from this book that will be stuck in my head for a long time, and if you are looking for something very, very hardcore in the horror genre, this will surely fill that appetite. I have mixed feelings on this book, but I am glad to see that Leisure Books was not afraid to publish this type of extreme horror. less

Definitely one of his best books out of the ones I have read! Terrific ending too.

Great book. Very descriptive in its grotesqueness. Cool ending, too.

An interesting premise let down by a silly, sophomoric narrative.
