review 1: Beautiful true life stories from the point of view of the mothers who had to leave or abandon their daughters in China. It was a unique experience to read about what the mothers went through, not just the daughters' journeys to find their roots. Economic and social reasons forced these women to abandon or even kill their babies and it haunts them decades after. This book never once gave me a chance to judging these women, instead I felt compassion.
review 2: I have only read one other book from this author, but I like her rhythm and descriptive boldness of very sad issues. I re-read many pages and was so moved. ... morek, I was thinking that she probably took a bit of exaggeration to make her point, but no - I see now that, if anything, it was tamed down. Thank you Xinran for writing and helping to educate/enlighten those of us through your experiences. less
