review 1: Just when I think I've found and read all the good M/M Fanfic out there, I find another gem. This one is blinding in its brilliance. You look at the title and blurb and think: "Meh. Another erotica fic. Probably just like the thousand just like it out there, half of which I've read and found wanting. Do I really need to read this one?" Yes. Yes, you do. Few times have I found such a poignant romance, such a precisely told story of love between two apparently mis-matched men. The perfect blend of romance and erotica, wrapped up in an unassuming little package and given away for free. I've never watched the show, but there's no need to be a Sherlock fan to enjoy this immensely. It does help, however, and I suggest you google the show's name or Benedict Cumberbatch, so you c... morean get some visuals (*sigh*) when you're reading. Nomnomnom.A feast for the heart AND the senses. Highly recommended. review 2: First, I'll say that you don't have to have seen the BBC/PBS series "Sherlock" with Cumberbatch and Freeman in order to enjoy this. Yes, it would augment your experience, especially in relation to Sherlock, but it's not mandatory. I've seen the series and yet I didn't reference it necessarily while reading, except for physical description.Following that, Sherlock's personality comes through 100% all on its own. Bonus: if you've seen the show, then some of his mannerisms and delivery of dialogue will make you smile a bit more.I have to say, there isn't much of a story here, but more of a series of encounters strung together due to this competition Sherlock and John decide to enter into between themselves. I could mention another reason as to why I feel this way but it feels spoiler-ish and I don't want to do that.To Sherlock specifically, it does feel like this author was channeling him as far as how the character is portrayed in the series. Those parts were simply delish. John's voice was a bit more... vague or maybe uncertain? At least when he was on his own/not with Sherlock. I didn't quite feel the same pull.Essentially, Sherlock and John are at their very best when together, whether sharing a silly joke, drinking tea, arguing or figuring out if this getting together thing should happen. Otherwise, things feel a bit thin. A lot of assumptions, "does he?" and "no way, he doesn't feel the same" and "wait... could he?" happen as they try to find their way towards each other. The last quarter of this book is fantastic. The realizations, the bravery in being a friend and yes, the hotness that is Sherlock and John together. There were some technical issues and a few times where the incorrect name was used - at least that's how it read to me. If you lerrrrrrrrrrrrrrve Sherlock the series and Cumberbatch and/or Freeman, definitely read this story. If you haven't seen it or don't really care for it, you will probably still enjoy this read, especially that last 25%, for a bit of fun. :) less
