review 1: I have always been fascinated by mermaids. The Little Mermaid was always my favorite Disney movie. I practically lived in the water as I child, whether it was in the pool, at the lake, or at the beach, and I was always pretending to be a mermaid. But it never seemed like enough. And then one day it hit me: books. Books would allow me to explore their world further, to live through all of these amazing stories. To finally experience what I'd always dreamed as a child. There was only one problem. Finding a mermaid book I would actually enjoy. I'll admit, I'm probably being more picky than I normally would be because of my life-long obsession, but I feel like there's one out there for me to fall in love with. And although this one was the best I've read yet, it still just did... moren't do it for me. And so my search continues.Possible spoilers ahead.I'll start by saying that I was torn between either two or three stars. I ultimately settled on three because I think some of the other mermaid books I've read were given two stars and as I've already stated, I found this to be the best one so far. But that doesn't change the fact that I had to make myself finish it. It's disappointing because I've been searching and searching, and I want to love every single mermaid book I read, but unfortunately that's not happening. The worst part about the situation is that the entire time I was reading the book, I thought to myself, "I don't really like this, but I don't know why." So this is going to be a very brief touch on why I think I didn't like the book. The writing. It just didn't do it for me. It felt rushed and it was choppy, making it very hard to follow what was happening at some moments. It was a very fascinating world, it had a lot of potential, but it was only ever very briefly described. I also felt that there were a lot of things that occurred that were really not necessary and were just there to take up space. I felt like everything wasn't very well planned out. There was this really big swim meet that was talked about, and there were two days in which it was to be occurring the next day, and I kind of expected a bit more from it. But after it being 'the next day' for the second day in a row, it was never mentioned again. Sure shit went down, but honestly I can't say if it was on the same day or not because it was so hard to follow things like that. On a slightly different note, what sort of school allows for practices for sports to interrupt actual classes? More than once???I also found the relationships a little annoying. Tristan was pining over Layla for the entire book while at the same time having another girl 'hate' him because he cheated on her. Since it seems like his feelings for Layla go way back, I don't think he should have been with this other girl at all. And then Layla decides the feelings she's feeling are because he's using mermaid voodoo on her or whatever and I just couldn't take it anymore. And don't get me started on Thalia hinting at wanting to give up her entire life for good like Tristan's mom for a boy she'd met like maybe three times. Speaking of Tristan: I really didn't like him. He was kind of annoying. His thoughts would be going in one direction at one moment, and then the completely opposite in the other. And I'm sorry, but if I were a guy and I suddenly found myself sprouting scales and a tail, I'm pretty sure my first though wouldn't be wondering where my dick went. Priorities. I found it very interesting that the world didn't only have mermaids. They had other mythical creatures as well. And we got a little glimpse of them here and there, but the only time we ever really saw several different types was the club scene. Which I thought was a rather cliched way to introduce all of these types of creatures at all once. I'm sure there are more things I didn't really like, but that's the majority I think. It wasn't awful, and I'm still a bit intrigued. I will probably read the other books after I step away for a bit. But for now, I will continue on my search for a mermaid book that I fall completely in love with.
review 2: I have read only the first 52 chapters of this novel. It is a well written story, typos are a given, and one I found I simply could not put down, it captivated me so.Written in the first person, present tense we meet a merman who doesn't realise he is a merman. This secret has been kept from him, then one day a storm breaks out and a wave strikes the beach on which he is life guarding. Of course it was his duty to ensure all are safe and whilst the majority of the beach bathers make it off the sand unharmed, a woman is fighting the waves and he races to her aid just prior to the strike of the wave itself.I won't delve into it any further, but I will say, you have to read this to see how he comes face to face with real living merfolk. Their entry into the story is very imaginative and very well thought out, but in such an authentic way you'll never guess was possible.I was debating my star rating and chose 4 because though I rate this story and think Zoraida a fine artist in the craft, her style in this book wasn't as good as I believe she will become. Cordova will be an exceptional writer in her, hopefully, long career. less

One word: merdudes. A fun addition to the mer-genre.

Story is good, but I guess I am too old to enjoy.
