review 1: This book is one of the best books I have ever read. The characters were amazing, the plot was entertaining, and the main character was extraordinary. The plot was well executed. The book was so well written that it seemed like that you were on a journey with Shad himself. It was also very cool to see Shad mature through the entire book. None of the characters were boring. All of them had their own unique personality. For example, Jeremiah was so much fun to read about.
review 2: I have read many young adult novels about the Civil War but this book offered a different point of view from other books I have read. Shad struggles with his allegiance to his family where his brother has gotten him involved with KKK and with his desire to learn to read which had led
... morehim to reading lessons with freed slaves. You can feel the inner struggle that people faced during this time period. less
