review 1: The story focuses on a woman, named Parker and her relationship with her grandmother. Parker's grandmother is the most important person in her life and her main source of love and acceptance. They have a fairly unusual but close relationship. The story deals with a lot of excentric behavior of Parker's parents as well as her grandmother. I felt a saddness throughout the book for Parker as she sure did not have a remotely "normal" childhood. The author seems to make this all work though and give us a well written, hard to let go of book.
review 2: My favorite things about the book...1.) The Letters! I love Dotty for her letters. Written in a fantasy world and creating a bond between both people. After starting the book I immediately started a letter to my 6 year... more old cousin. 2.) Jerry. He is a character that I felt like I've know. He is so warm and makes the book feel like home. I love his newspaper collection and his love letters made me fall in love. 3.) I was happy that Tanya and Parker became a family. They needed each other and those types of families are the best. I wish that Phila's character would have developed a little further because he seemed like an interesting guy. 4.) The movies often highlighted a happy moment in the book. I feel like most people can relate to that sensation at the end of a great movie. Dotty would watch the same movie with Parker and she would watch the ending several times. My favorite quote is on page 144 "It was similar to how she felt as she watched old movies with her grandmother. As if there were some sort of underlying conversation that she wasn't part of, though she desperately wanted to be." less
