review 1: I could not finish this book. Hence the DNF. I think I got to 20% (it's a long book) and my brain was screaming at me for mercy. I didn't like all the multiple POVs they all sounded the same, all the characters were flat, whiny and boring. The POVs didn't add anything to the story. Everything that was told in each of the views could have been expressed quickly and more emotionally through dialogue or action and the story would have moved swifter and smoother. One thing I can't stand when reading is lots of repetition. It grates on my nerves and this book had a lot of it. One characters view would tell something of another character and when the view would switch to said character it would be repeated again. This read like a hot mess of a first draft. With a lot of editing ... moreand cutting it could have been slimmed down by at least 50%. Won't be reading the rest of the series.
review 2: Although it started of a bit confusing with al the different characters, in the end I found it a mesmerizing book and can't wait to read the sequel. I admit I was nervous when I saw that the story was going to be told in five different narratives. I've never been a fan of switching narratives between characters.It took me a few go arounds to adapt to the personalities of the voices and keep them straight in my head, but once the adjustment was made the story flowed so smoothly that I was completely caught up in it. A great novel to read; it was fun, fast paced and incredibly well written. less
