review 1: Rock Crystal - an interesting book. Recommended to me by my son who is a rock climber and loves the mountains. After reading it I felt compelled to know a little more about the author, which a person can do by reading the introduction. A word of warning however; DO NOT READ THE INTRODUCTION until you have read the story as the ending is given away - argh. Fortunately my son told me to wait. Adalbert Stifter was a nineteenth century Austrian - a different time period, a different style of writing than one is perhaps used to, and translating from one language to another often stilts the language as well. Having said all that, Stifter was especially notable for the vivid natural landscapes depicted in his writing, and this little book is no exception. The reader is tre... moreated to a portrait of the mountain in fine detail, necessary in the telling of the simple yet gripping tale to follow. The story takes place on Christmas Eve which also adds to the richness of the tale.
review 2: Read this novella (long short story, really) based on a recommendation at NPR Books. I found it a lovely little fairy story, or folk tale with possible supernatural elements. Very subtle; what the children see at night in the sky as they are sheltering under an ice cave roof high up on a snowy mountain--well, it could be the stars. It is Christmas Eve, though.Beautiful descriptive paragraphs. Not much happens here. If you are looking for adventure, you won't find it. Just a sweet, gentle, possibly magical little story. That's it! That's enough. less
