review 1: Similar in tone to another of my favorite espionage stories, Red Sparrow, this one gives us the inside look at spying from a non-insider POV. Philip Mangan is a reporter who finds himself in a relationship with a spy, Peanut, who has been incarcerated for 20 years and doesn't realize that the media outlet he used to spy for no longer does so. The subject is Chinese nuclear warhead delivery systems that the US has no idea still exists so the payload is vital and Mangan is the only way to access the information. The action is fast, the tension high. The characters are very well-developed, the story is believable and the writing is outstanding. You would never believe this is a first novel, but Brookes has been a foreign correspondent for the BBC in China for many years. I ho... morepe this book does well so we will see more novels from him.
review 2: An intriguing spy drama about a Chinese prisoner Li Huasheng known as Peanut, once was a aeronautical engineer imprisoned unjustly for over twenty years, escapes. Now he's determined to reveal the corruption within the Chinese government and exposing the individuals responsible for his imprisonment, Peanut also receives the help of a British journalist Philip Mangan that helped him stay incognito. less
