review 1: I picked this up because I like Carolla and simply wanted some light side reading. More a need for humor than anything else. With that said; the book did not always follow through on giving me the level of comedy I was seeking. This book basically is written to cover his life (and rise) set around places he lived and jobs he held through the years. Yet, he admittedly leaves out portions of this journey and stories because he covered similar in his previous book. So what might otherwise be complete information ends up coming off incomplete and filled with holes. I know Carolla tends to write in diatribe rant style, but even when you read the book there are stories he tells and thoughts he shares which suddenly tail off; losing clarity on his point. Believe it or not he did ... moreattempt to write with a purpose (shared at the end of the book). Carolla just misses putting it all together along the way. There are some small moments which are extremely funny and you can relax and laugh in pure fun. On the other hand there is a bulk of the book that feels like someone spinning old 20 something tales best left between good friends since they are the only ones who can really appreciate the mischief and find the humor (e.g. I guess you had to be there versions). Carolla comes off self indulgent too when he comments about his success and this simply does not make you endeared to him any more after reading the book. Not the worst book and still has enough comedy to carry it through, but I will forget most of it sooner than later.
review 2: Good biography fun from a slacker-boy (who is not really a slacker). Carolla is not afraid to call it as he sees it, PC police be damned. I generally do not mind the occasional use of foul language and Adam does not exceed my tolerance level. My only cringing moments were when he used the C-word to describe a few women. Also did not care for how he described their house as “his” to his wife because “he paid for it.” Not sure if he really said that to his wife because he is still alive, but he would not care what I think about him, which is part of the slacker charm. I kinda knew who he was, but had never seen his shows. He has a new TV show about sleazy contractors (he is also a carpenter) that I might watch. less
