review 1: This book has people mind-controlling flocks of birds and dystopian political systems. And gypsies! Really, it's hard not to write a good book with that setup. Underground cities, explosions! There is definitely a cult appeal to The Avian Gospels, narrated as scripture by the collective "we" who survive the book's events. There is a strange disconnect from the "we," though, as the reader never gets to know them on any personal level. It's unclear how they know the full extent of the events on which they report. Is it the birds doing the narrating? Sometimes I think so.
review 2: It seems a little weird to review this now, since really this is only half the book (consisting of books 1 and 2), but I love it so far. I love the weird combination of this world/not
... morethis world. It seems like we're in Hungary, but then not in Hungary. Not quite the Hungary of the past but not quite Hungary of the present or future. I really like the way it works with the story. It has the interest of something foreign, yet the pull of something faintly familiar. I can't wait to get into the second book. less

A plague of birds. I wonder if this will do anything to my bird phobia?
