review 1: Soo finished this one in record time and renewed it from the library twice as it was one of those that I kept overlooking in my backpack so to finally get to it and enjoy it was so great..it is the story of a real life ménage-trois of three really vivid well drawn characters with a married couple and their stripper mistress in a sense. The three (Perla the stripper was easily my first favorite but Sophie grew on me) form a precarious but real relationship as Sophie is paralyzed from the waist down due to an unfortunate accident they explain in all its tragedy and how Julian the husband meets Perla and she impacts their life..Okay so I mentioned how well drawn the characters are and the backstories and motives and reasonings but somewhere I felt there should have been more ... moreplot, more going on after the meeting of the women and the transition to their working relationship and so on into the future, somewhere I felt the story wasn't enough and should have had more so for that and that alone it lost a star for me..the writing, the descripions, the intrigue and readability was there so I recommend this but the story itself was lacking in plot and depth of action but overall an unexpectedly great read..
review 2: This amazing debut has it all -- three exceptional characters provide the Troika of the title, but it's their interaction that provides the tension and heart at its core. Justin, who having led a life overcoming unusual challenges starting with his Russian childhood meets Perla, a young dancer in a seedy Little Havana strip club. Told from three points of view what unfolds is a story of powerful originality and force. It just misses a 5 star rating because some of the segues are not as smooth or believable as they could be, but the strengths of the characters carry the action forward, and the unflinching description at the center is one of the most devastating things I have read. It would not be fair to tell who relates it and why would give away too much of a plot element that should be revealed to the reader as the author intended, so I won't do so here. Highly recommended. less

The writing was good as was the character development. But I found it depressing.
