The Uninvited Guests by Sadie Jones
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
2.5 Stars.
I thought it would be creepier than what it was… turns out it was more about family drama and relationships and the anxiety about people in your home.
I chose this book to read as part of my spooky, thriller and weird reads. I was slightly disappointed it didn’t deliver in the thriller ish or ghosty aspect.
Without giving away spoilers, the people that came from the accident weren’t really the main focus, more the side line that seemed to dishevel everything else. Like taking that spool of tightly wound wool and letting go – I guess that was what happened to the family that was left. I didn’t like the main lady of the house, I found her hard to connect with as a character.
The outer characters were okay, but again, I wasn’t connecting with them. I liked the little girl’s struggle with the small horses – I felt the satirical comments on society of that time and class were well done and reminded me very much of my favourite period dramas.
All in all it was an okay read, I am pleased I’ve read it but it’s not a thriller or a grabbing drama you’ll want to read again, it’s a comment on society using this family as that poor ball of wool.
