The Cold Cereal Saga
review 1: Have you ever thought about the characters on your favorite box of cereal? What would you do if you found out they were real? What would you do if you found out that the manufacturers of your favorite cereal were doing bad things? I wish this book would have been around when I was a kid because then my migraines would have been diagnosed a lot earlier then it was. Scott, the main character gets migraines although his symptoms are a little different than mine but the author does a good job of explaining the common symptoms. This book of Cold Cereal is filled with 75% Adventure, 57% Danger, 68% Magic, 35% Puzzles, 40% Diabolical Schemes, 20% Legend, 93% Humor and 49% Mystery. I will never look at another box of cereal the same. I plan on reading the next book of the se... moreries.
review 2: This is an odd and really original book. I definitely would've read this as a kid. Whether I would've understood all the jokes and references is another thing. I was a pretty trivia-savvy young'un, but there's a LOT of references in here that I'm not sure I would've understood (the Elton John character who's stage name is E.J.'s real name? Well, maybe...but I thought that was kind of a weird touch.) The secret-society-who-aren't-the-Masons-but-basically-are? I would've understood the plot but not some of the jokes, probably.Still, there's lots I would've gotten. The cereal mascots and their unfortunate back-stories are GREAT and hilarious and also poignant and disturbing. The "bad stuff in your breakfast cereal"/secret experiments on kids thing is neat and creepy and subversive and also funny in places. There's quite a bit of darkness and danger which I would've liked, but it's also tempered with surreal humor. Lots of Irish and British folklore woven in, which is super-cool. The author does the fantastic illustrations, and his written descriptions are equally detailed and vivid.Only one thing really annoyed me: the main female character gets no POV writing. I understand that it's partially because she's special and part of the mystery and all, but as a girl, it makes me mad. In addition, she's super-smart but also super-sensitive and helpless and gets infantilized a lot, in a way that seems kind of unnecessary. Really there's NO female POV character. Grrr. There are more books in this series though. I hope one is introduced. Despite my quibbles, this was interesting enough that I'll probably read the rest. less
