review 1: I enjoyed the story and thought it was touching. The social issues are strong and I think a discussion about the grandmother would have to happen for some kids to understand her depression. I felt a lot of empathy for the main character and her father. Sometimes parents make impulsive choices that have lasting negative affects on their families. It was an engaging story, I couldn't put it down until I was done.
review 2: Zebra Forest is a complicated family drama. The two protagonists, Annie and Rew are siblings that live with their grandmother in an isolated house near the forest. The state prison is nearby and the town is in an uproar when a prisoner escapes. The family is thrown into emotional turmoil when the prison escapee turns up at their house.
... moreThey are shocked to discover that he is their father, who they believed had died. This novel is a tense, emotional thriller. It starts a little slow, but picks up speed and becomes a riveting read. I recommend this for 5th graders and up. less
