review 1: A gift from a lovely friend, Scenes came at the right time: just before my very own wedding. This sweet little book chronicles the inevitable, mundane and often unnecessary tasks to be completed before any wedding. The awkward making of the guest list, the impossibly boring process of choosing florists, venues and attire, often paired with a bout of existential angst and panic attacks. It is all very much bitter sweetly familiar to me. Sarah and Adrian are relatable and their nuptial sorrows are painfully real. I smiled, saw myself and the mister in it more than once, laughed out loud and genuinely enjoyed it.
review 2: As someone who has been engaged four times and married thrice, I'm a bit of an expert when it comes to planning a wedding, negotiating times an
... mored cost with venues, planning a meal that will satisfy everyone, organizing a party that will be fun for everyone. Not everything goes the way you want it to. Even if you spend a whole day going through your 500+ cd collection, the DJ will still end up playing YMCA. Your meticulously crafted invitations will just end up in your guests' wastebaskets. The chicken will be dry. With all that experience of my own to draw from, I couldn't help but enjoy Scenes from an Impending Marriage. It's a cute small graphic novel chronicling the events leading up to Tomine's wedding. The collection of vignettes dealing with the DJ, the Venue, and everything in between, cuts a nice balance, satirical without sounding bitter or dark. Tomine is not above gently mocking himself and his wife, using simple but lovely pen and ink drawings, and putting himself and his bride in caricature in Family Circus and Peanuts spoofs. Particularly poignant is an episode where the two of them decide to volunteer their time preparing dinner for AIDS and HIV patients in an attempt to cut through their self imposed narcissism and remind them that there are bigger problems than which table setting to register for at Crate and Barrel. For those who have been married for years as well as the newly engaged, this is a great book. It would make a perfect engagement or anniversary present. less
