review 1: Interestingly, when I looked up Mathilde on Wikipedia, it turns out she was born 100 years to the day before me, so that made figuring out how old she was at each juncture easy :) and she lived to be nearly 100, may God grant me a similarly long life.A very solid, well written, interesting historical fiction (and sometimes more fiction than others, as the author admits in the author's notes) about Tsar Nikolai II's mistress, the dancer Mathilde Kschessinska. Now and then, a bit of a dense, heavy read, but you definitely wanted to keep going and see where it was leading.
review 2: A simply stunning book. A must read. Detail of life in Russia before Russian revolution were simply stunning. It is a fabulous narrative of history masked in a true art of story telli
... moreng. Along with this it is fantastic lesson on the history of ballet, art, performance and its tue essence. The narrative immensely moved me. It felt it gives me an opportunity to see Russian life pre- and post- revolution. Most of us have romantic notion of revolution. The depiction of barbarism, madness, cruelty, and destruction that accompanied Russian revolution was startling, at times moving and emotionally painful to handle. It is beautifully written, each page grips you and further you go further you become part of that era, that day, that moment. Adrianne attention to landscape, character, ambiance, is par excellence, stunning to believe at times. I would recommend it to every one who is interested in history but not a dry one but rather one which makes you take that journey with that era. That time, and those people. less
