review 1: 4/12/14 Review #1The main characters of the story are Karl and Fiorella. Karl is an eighteen years old guy. Karl’s girlfriend is Fiorella. They’re not only dating, but also has a deep friendship at the same time. Fiorella is someone who looks for affection, yet she doesn’t find comfort with Karl because he doesn’t know how to express his feelings. "What is true love, asked Karl" (Chambers 8). This quote represents the fact that Karl is demanding help from Fiorella, but indirectly without knowing what’s behind it/the truth. Overall, without Karl and Fiorella there’s no story. There’s a major conflict in the story. Karl has dyslexia which is one of his weakness. Dyslexia is when the brain doesn’t remember certain things, or has a hard time learning how to read... more, write, and recognize symbols. That what keeps Karl weak in his relationship with Fiorella, remembering that Fiorella doesn’t know that. "If only I knew how to prove my love to Fiorella, I’d write her a nice love letter" (Chambers 23). This quote represents the fact that Karl is dying to show what Fiorella really deserves. To summarize, Karl is hoping that at the end he learns how to communicate with Fiorella talking about love. The setting of the story occurs in many different places, but always for the same reason. The setting takes place at school, Fiorella favorite writer’s house, and at Karl’s house. For instance, these places are very important to Karl because it’s there where he finally learns how to read and write. "Without my tutor, I’d go nowhere" (Chambers 29). This quote represents the fact that maybe with the help of his tutor, in the future it may make a big change. To sum up, Karl is willing to learn and he’s sure of not giving up on his girl. The theme of the story is "fear". Fear is the right term to describe the theme of the story because Karl fears that if one day Fiorella his girlfriend finds out that he has dyslexia, then she’ll think he’s weak and not the right guy for her. Karl is truly in love with Fiorella and doesn’t want to let her go, that’s why he’s holding on to her and putting all of his heart into fixing that problem. He also fears of losing her, that at the end she may think he’s a liar when the truth is he just didn’t want to hurt her. "I hope the truth doesn’t slip away" (Chambers 30). This quote represents the fact that Karl surely doesn’t want Fiorella to know about all of that. To end with, fear corresponds exactly the theme of the story.
review 2: I think this is a pretty good book. Its about a author helped a boy named Karl because Karl remind him of himself. Karl fall in loved with Fiorella. Fiorella loves books and words and she asked Karl to write about himself. But Karl is dyslexia, he didn't tell Fiorella about it because he think she will think he is stupid and dumped him. So he went to a author that Fiorella like for help. When Karl and Fiorella went to camping, Karl told her that he didn't write it. Fiorella was shocked and made and dumped him. Karl was depress and try to suicide. less
