review 1: This book is truly one of the most touching novels I have ever read. McConnon brings us back to the WW II era to a small town in Italy were we meet our main character, a boy in poverty who grows up to be one of the greatest Italian cyclist of all time. McConnon shows us what it was like being around people who were oppressed by Hitler and how one man could make a significant difference to help the non-aryan people by simply riding his bike. We follow Gino Bartali (the main character) throughout various of his daring expeditions to help transport documents to different families throughout Europe by smuggling them in his bike. Bartali was not only a great bicyclist, but a great hero. A truly fantastic piece of historical literature which I suggest to all rea... moreders.
review 2: A story that needs to be told and recorded. So much of WWII first hand history is being lost. Kudos to the McCannon's for researching Bartali and the various lives he touched along the way.Whether he is a hero or a man of circumstance in extraordinary times is up to the reader. But what is undeniable is that, despite being of strong faith, he was human, and some small parts of him, good, bad or indifferent, we can all relate to.Road to Valor's extensive Notes/Bibliography section alone is worthy of a couple of stars. less
